WELCOME
Thank you for your interest in our mini courses! We're excited to pilot these opportunities for the first time for adults in their 20's & 30's. These mini courses are a chance for participants to take a 'deep dive' into a topic of their choice from a local expert in Catholic Theology.
WHO ARE MINI COURSES FOR?
Any young adult (18-39) looking for deeper formation in the Catholic faith.
HOW LONG ARE THEY?
There will be four sessions over four consecutive weeks. Each mini course session will be about 2 hours long.
HOW MUCH DO MINI COURSES COST?
Each mini course is $25 per person. Participants must sign up one week prior to the start of the course. This fee pays for the teacher, space, and hospitality of the mini course. If a participant signs up for two mini courses they will pay for both courses.
WHAT HAPPENS AT THE END OF A MINI COURSE?
Mini courses are meant to be temporary. Participants may choose to do future courses, but there isn’t a certificate, overarching curriculum, etc. They are simply for the sake of growing in one’s faith.
WHAT MINI COURSES ARE BEING OFFERED THIS SUMMER?
Option #1 | Freed for Worship: A Biblical Approach to Understanding Reconciliation | by Caroline Harvey
- At Old Saint Mary Church in Downtown Milwaukee | 7:00pm-9:00pm | July 16th, 23rd, 30th, & August 6th
- All of mankind has a natural desire and capacity for God. However, understanding how to respond to that desire, and to offer oneself as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, no longer comes naturally because of sin. The goal of this mini-course is to understand how the sacrament of Reconciliation is the restoration of this natural desire, and the catalyst for worship, through the biblical understanding of receptivity, desire and freedom.
- Caroline Harvey is the Associate Communication Director for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Prior to working at the archdiocese, Caroline worked in various ministry positions throughout the archdiocese, focusing her work on teaching and discipleship. She is currently pursuing a D.Min. in Liturgical Catechesis from Catholic University of America. She holds an MA in Biblical theology and BA in Communications Media from John Paul the Great Catholic University.
Option #2 | The Liturgy: Hymn of Praise Sung throughout all Ages in the Halls of Heaven | by Mike Brummond, S.T.D.
- At UW-Milwaukee Newman Center | 7:00pm-9:00pm | July 22nd, 29th, August 5th, & 12th
- Discussions about liturgy frequently revolve around practical matters or points of personal preference. What we are often lack is a truly theological vision of the liturgy that centers on its inner nature. Our mini-course will discuss the nature of the liturgy, exploring themes such as: the foundations of the liturgy in the Trinitarian love of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; the liturgy as an exercise of Christ the priest; the worship of the Mystical Body of Christ; the liturgy as a foretaste of the life of heaven; the relation of the liturgy to both the incarnation of Jesus and our own human nature; the meaning and methods of active participation in the liturgy; and much more. Viewed through this lens, you will never see liturgy the same way again!
- Mike Brummond holds a Doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) from the University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein Seminary. He is currently assistant professor of systematic studies and Director of the MA program at Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology in Hales Corners. Mike has a broad teaching repertoire in systematic theology and beyond, but tends to concentrate on sacramental and liturgical theology. Previously, he worked for nearly a decade in parish evangelization and catechesis. Mike has taught theology as an adjunct instructor at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL, and has taught classes for the dioceses of Milwaukee, Green Bay, Madison, Joliet, and Rockford. Mike and his wife Mary Beth live in Greendale with their sons Lucas and Silas.
